During your Outback Road trip Adventure
What sort of distances/travelling times are we looking at in the outback?
Australia covers a vast area, 7.6 million square kilometres in fact! Did you know Australia is 22 x bigger than Germany, with 87% of our population living within 50km of the coast, and 75% of our land mass considered ‘very remote’ according to our government?!
The outback is one of the many things that makes Australia a unique place to visit, it is on the bucket list of many Australians and International visitors, and an outback road trip should not be taken lightly. We can assist you with a premium, reliable vehicle, but good preparation and planning is also very important.
Some roads you are planning to take may only be accessible by 4WD and can be slow to travel. Please make sure you have researched the roads you are travelling along on dedicated websites that provide information and advice as well as local visitor information centres in the regions you are travelling through.
Google Maps is not a dedicated website, and unfortunately doesn’t understand the current road conditions and drive times.
Links to great sources of information and advice in each region are found on each depot page of our website.
If you still need some assistance with planning, please don’t hesitate to contact our reservations team at sales@adventurerentals.com.au or call us on 1300 274 473 (within Australia) or +61 8 7918 7844 (International).
Is there anywhere we aren't allowed to drive?
While we are very flexible with where you can go, some restrictions exist. All roads you travel on need to be gazetted (mapped). Places that you can’t take our vehicles include:
(a) on any unformed track;
(b) K’gari (Fraser Island), Queensland;
(c) along the Old Telegraph Track section of Cape York;
(d) along the Canning Stock Route; and
(e) across Yardie Creek in the Cape Range National Park.
(f) below the high tide mark on any beach
(g) where the vehicle will be exposed to salt water, including salt lakes and salt flats
In addition to the above locations, unless we have given written permission before you travel, you must never take our vehicles:
(a) above the snow line
(b) between mainland Australia and Tasmania in either direction;
(c) through any river, stream, creek or tidal crossing over .5m in depth
(d) through flood waters or on flood prone roads or on any road where the state or condition of the road make the use of the Vehicle unsafe;
(e) on any road where the police or any government or statutory authority has issued a warning, caution or which has been closed;
(f) onto any road where we have notified you that the use of the vehicle is not allowed
Are we allowed to drive on the beach?
Yes, you are allowed to drive our cars on the beach, however, it is at your own risk (you are not covered by any insurance). Please remember to:
Lower your tyre pressure accordingly
Stay above the high tide/mean high water springs mark
DO NOT come in contact with any salt water
Will I be able to access fuel and water easily?
The more remote you travel the fewer the fuel options – not to mention how expensive it can get in some remote regions. Water is available at most places, though its good to fill up if you were going very remote. Staying hydrated is very important in hot climatic conditions.
Are there eateries and foodstores available in remote areas?
You will find groceries and eateries at all tourist spots, though be aware it may be costly in very remote areas. It’s advisable to stock up in larger towns and cities when you can.
What are the dangers of crocodiles and other wildlife?
Crocodiles are dangerous around waterways and are not to be underestimated. Get croc-wise information here.
Other wildlife that can pose a threat include animals on our roads – especially at night – so drive carefully. More information here.
What is the best way to protect us from mosquitoes and midges?
Protect yourself early morning and early evening from insects by wearing sufficient insect repellent (Bushmans brand is recommended) as well as long sleeves and pants.
Thermacells are worth the investment for all mosquito-free camping. If you are camping near billabongs and waterways use these to deter mosquitos. They can be purchased locally at a hardware store.
How can we charge our devices when travelling?
All of our 4WD vehicles have USB A charging points. We recommend you charge phones whilst driving using the USB A point in the centre console of the vehicle. Below is a guide to the location and number of charging points for each vehicle type.
Toyota Prado 4WD Car & Camper: 1 x USB A point in the centre console (use when engine is running). 1 x USB A Charging point in the rear of the vehicle near the fridge plug (use when vehicle engine is off and you have stopped). 12V Cigarette lighter point in rear boot near fridge plug also.
Toyota Hilux 4WD Campers: 1 x USB A point in the centre console (use when engine is running). 4 x USB A charging points in the rear canopy (2 on each side), located on the front wall. 12V Cigarette lighter point in rear canopy also.
All vehicles also have a 12V cigarette lighter plug in the centre console, adaptors to give you 2 additional USB A charging points can be purchased at your own expense.
What extra personal items do you recommend we bring/purchase for our outback off-road adventure?
While our 4WD Campers come complete with full camping equipment, below are our top recommendations of items you can bring to make your outback camping adventure as comfortable and enjoyable as possible:
Head Torch
Toilet Paper
Thermacell (the BEST insect repellent device, you can purchase them from hardware stores or camping shops)
Butane Gas 220g. We start you off with a couple of bottles but make sure you put these on your shopping list, especially if you are hiring a Toyota Prado 4WD Camper.
USB A charging cords
12V USB A Adaptor (from cigarette lighter)
Returning your 4WD Camper or 4WD Car
What time can we return our 4WD?
Our depots run on an appointment schedule so your return time is confirmed with you via email prior to your trip.
Do I need to clean the vehicle before returning it?
Vehicles and equipment must be returned clean inside and out. A cleaning fee of $88 per hour applies if returned excessively dirty (red dirt, mud, sand, rubbish).
Please go to a self car wash before return and give the vehicle an outside water-pressure wash (no chemicals) and a vacuum inside to remove mud, dust, sand, and dirt. Remove all rubbish, food, and personal items. All vehicles are non-smoking; extra cleaning/deodorising fees will apply if this is breached.
Do I need to refuel the vehicle before returning?
The fuel tank will be full when you collect the vehicle, therefore needs to be fuel when you return it.
Please remember Diesel, Diesel, Diesel!
How long does it take to return a vehicle?
A vehicle return takes around 20 minutes. This gives us time to chat about your adventure and to gather feedback on how your Adventure Rentals vehicle went during your road trip adventure.
